Holidays free from dental problems

Don’t let a dental emergency spoil your vacation. If you end up with toothache on your holiday, you will be sorry that you had not done any planning earlier.  You can take some preventive measures and if you are undergoing some special dental treatment, ask your dentist how you can treat yourself, in case there is an emergency, and carry all the necessary medication with you. Carry your own toothpaste and mouthwash as well, because if you have sensitive teeth, it is better to use your own familiar brands than using the ones in hotels in new countries.

If you are going for a long vacation and are prone to tooth problems, it is best to visit the dentist before taking off.  It could just be a routine check-up with a cleaning up of the teeth.  If you are flying, there should not be any procedures undertaken which will make your teeth sensitive to air pressure changes.

In case of some dental treatment that you are already going through like root canal, it is best to get it done and then move out for a vacation.  Healing takes a considerable amount of time and there can be pain if there has been treatment of the cavities or loose fillings.

A common dental emergency is a crown or a filling coming off or getting lost.  Just use some temporary treatment when you are on vacation, like a visit to the local dentist or you can just buy some dental cement and close the hole yourself.  If you break a tooth, or the crown comes off, try and retrieve it, because your dentist at home can fix it back for you.

Carry a dental first aid kit with you; it is also called a dental emergency kit.  It normally contains material to fix common dental problems temporarily and could be of use to you, if you suffer often from dental problems. If you are used to brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush, you can carry it with you, but it may not be possible to use it everywhere.  At least you can enjoy your holiday and come home and let the dentist deal with your dental problem.
